The Woechen Thuk-Je Choeling Monastery:
After the death of Par-Kyang Bajra Lama, the caretaker of the "Dharmachakra Monastery at Swayambhu, the monastery was much neglected and had reached a deteriorated state. Hence in 1962, Rinpoche was requested to take charge of the monastery by Par-Kyang Bajra Lama’s second wife, Ani Choe Gyalmo and her son Rizin Dorjee. Rinpoche accepted their request and assured them that he will try his best not only to take care of it but to make it a source of spiritual benefit to as many beings as possible.
Being a simple monk yet a strict practitioner, words about Rinpoche’s profound wisdom and his unique ability to heal people with different ailments soon reached the ears of many devotees who were in need of a true spiritual guidance. Gradually, more and more people came to seek his blessing and guidance. Seeing the devotion of the people and their genuine enthusiasm in practicing Dharma, In 1966, after his fourth year in Nepal, Rinpoche started the practices of "Nyungney" at the Wochen Thuk-je Choeling monastery at Swayambhu, Kathmandu.
However, the “Dharmachakra Monastery” was not big enough to accommodate the practitioners whose number kept ever increasing. Therefore, with the kind donation from various sources, Rinpoche established a new Monastery nearby which came to be known as” Woechen Thuk-Je Choeling Monastery”. It’s situated on the hill opposite to “Swoyambhunath Stupa”. In the neighborhood below these two monasteries are Manjushri temple, enshrining “Manjushri’s throne” and a stupa dedicated of Kasyapa Buddha.
Nyungney is a simple religious observance carried out with fasting on every alternative day of the course. A day of fasting followed by a day of non-fasting combines to make a pair of days (chha) of the "Nyungney". The duration or the number of such paired days depends on the importance of the "Nyungney". Altogether six "Nyungney" practices are observed in a year.
On the day of the fasting, the devotee is subjected to self-penance where he or she is not to eat, drink, speak, or even swallow one's own saliva and will follow a very particular routine for the day. These practices of the "Nyungney" have always been carried out under the personal direction of the Rinpoche even till today.
" I have been conducting and practicing "Nyungney" all these decades for the restoration of a harmonious human society and for the well being of every sentient being in this world, and I shall always continue to do so".

BENEFITS OF NYUNGNE PRACTICE:
According to Rinpoche, if the practice is observed and carried out sincerely, it is believed to remove one's negative elements, sins, negative karma, accumulating positive karma and rebirth, avoid violence, conflicts and even wars.
For Example:
In 1996 one old lady disciple Ama Hridhar (who had performed Nyungney Karpo Cha-18) had told Rinpoche that her time had come to go from this world. She had offered her ornaments as her last worldly offer and requested Rinpoche to do "PHOWA" , consciousness transference, for her the next day. She even said "fare well" to her friends in the Nyungney gathering. Rinpoche was not sure what she meant but the next day, she passed away peacefully. Rinpoche was very much moved as such a lady had acquired such a high stage of spiritual development by only doing Nyungney. Aama Hridhar is survived by her four sons and many grand children and living in Kathmandu.
Another lady disciple of Rinpoche, Mrs. Namgyal Chodon had performed Nyungey Karpo Cha- 15. One day on 19th she had come to Rinpoche and had requested Rinpoche to say "PHOWA' on 21.4.2000 at 1:00pm, saying she was going away. As it happened she died exactly at the same time on that day. Mrs. Namgyal Chodon is survived by her three sons.
Many years ago, in 1983, one of Rinpoche's disciples Mrs. Rinu Karna Maya (husband, Yuri Kazi Khangskar) could not bear children. She had wanted to adopt a child but she could not find one. Hence she was in a great distress and requested Rinpoche to help and perform prayers. At that time Rinpoche was in a trance and had told the couple not to worry as Rinpoche had requested "Chenresig" and very soon they will be given a boy. The couple were rather surprised and wanted to make sure, so they went to Rinpoche the next day and asked again. Rinpoche could not recall such consent. However, exactly after one week at the Eleventh hour at night, the parents found a baby wrapped in a cloth among the rubbish near a bridge. The parents were overjoyed by this miraculous incident and Rinpoche gave the boy name as "Sangye Dhondup" which means "All Wish-full-filling Buddha". Sangye Dhondup is now a young person of good character and leading a very healthy and successful life.
Another incident occurred: - as recently as on 3/8/2003, Rinpoche was performing Nyungney and on that day Rinpoche gave a special Sermon to commemorate the day when Lord Buddha gave his first Sermon at Lumbini. On that day, a very strange incident occurred in the middle of the Sermon as Rinpoche said that he wanted the "State Oracle of Tibet, Nechung" to bring a statue of Lord Buddha for all those disciples and people to see and worship before the Sermon over. To the astonishment of all present, a man had brought a statue of Lord Buddha and offered it to Rinpoche. Rinpoche was overjoyed and all the Nyungey disciples were so much moved and spellbound. This incident and the above happenings are true and are written with no other motives than to reassure believers that good deeds indeed bring good results in this world.
People of all walks of life regardless of castes, creed, nationality and religion are welcome to take part in this Nyungney practice. Those who want to take part in the Nyungney practice during the Saka Dawa (19th May - 4th June) are requested to inform us in advance of one week. Accommodation and food for the practitioners are arranged in the monastery itself.
In the tenth month of the Tibetan calendar (23rd Nov - 29th Nov.) a seven-day long "Yangdrub", a tantric ritual that calls for fortune, eliminates famine, poverty and disease in the country, is observed under the direction of the Rinpoche.
This Yangdrub widely practiced by many of Rinpoche's disciples and well over hundred families have this good fortune and good luck vase of "Namsey" which brings good of fortune not only to the practitioners but to all beings as a whole.
In 1975 Rinpoche established the Woechen Thuk-Je Choeling Monastery next to the Dharma-chakra Monastery upon requests from his local followers. Today with sixty-five monks and a few caretakers, the monastery keeps itself constantly busy with various pujas and rites arranged upon requests from people of all walks of life.
In 1978 Khenpo Pemba Gyaltsen (Khen Rinpoche) from the Loseling Monastery in Mundgod-India, was invited to inaugurate the monastery. It was during this occasion that Khen Rinpoche appointed Ven. Drubthob Rinpoche as the abbot of Woechen Thuk-Je Choeling monastery and simultaneously appointed Thupten Namgyal-lag as the Chanchoe of the monastery and Rinpoche. |
